introduction
hey! I am a 24, sometimes 17 year old girl, currently working at AnibeeTV , a streaming anime tv shows and news.
I always like opening the fridge. Opening a fridge is like seeing hidden treasures, hoping to find chocolates, cookies, or any delicious surprises. When I was in primary school, while my folks listened to Bondan Prakoso or Eno Lerian or Trio Kwek Kwek, I listened to No Doubt, Spice Girls, and Backstreet Boys. I imagined growing up like Gwen Steffani, couldn't wait my turn to dress like her and scream on the microphone.
No Doubt's single "I'm Just a Girl" influenced me a lot, my favorite song until now, so it was like for decades. Of course when back then when I was a kid, I didn't get the meaning but I really enjoyed how Gwen sounds in that song.
I was 7 year old when my sister bought the laser disc of Michael Jackson's Dangerous
We played it every weekend. The duration is like 2 hours, but very intense. I mean, no boring scene. "In The Closet" , "Do You Remember The Time", and "Black Or White" are my favorite songs , oh .. not to mention "Heal The World" , hahaha me and my best friend Uki would holding hands and swing from side to side just like the audiences in the show. Kids in the street, adults too, in the clip, said that Michael Jackson was "The king of pop!"
So there goes my first idea of pop music ... the slow songs had to have a meaningful lyric as "Heal The World" , "Gone Too Soon" , or at least give a soothing effect like "You're Not Alone" . I did not remember any of Jacko's song giving me atmosphere like a hot, damp room in the slum. They all made me feel like being in the most prestigious discotheque in the 90s. Oh, did I know discotheque in my age of 7? Yes, my aunt went to disco quite often that time, and shared stories. Well, I don't know what she wore to disco, but something about her.. I remember this thing:
Okay, back to the music thing,
So my earliest music-tasting period was started with Michael Jackson (1994-1996), The Beatles (but I wasn't craving for it as much as I was to MJ -- it was just because I shared a room with my sister and she played it all the time), a bit of Nat King Cole (mom's CD), and here comes the period of Spice Girls (1997-1999) , and oh, All Saints.
Spice (1996)
Wannabe
Say You'll Be There
2 Become 1
Who Do You Think You Are
Mama
Spice World (1997)
Spice Up Your Life
Stop
Too Much
Saturday Night Divas
Never Give Up On The Good Times
Move Over
Do It
Denying
Viva Forever
Lady is a Vamp
Again, this music of Spice Girls I considered as "pop music" because, it gave me that super-dancey mood, just like MJ. And the slow songs like "Too Much" , "2 Become 1" also had their magic spell on me.
Usually, I went to the music store already knowing what to buy, and went straight to the row because if it was not available yet, I would like to face the dissapointment as soon as possible. You have no idea how dissapointing it be, for me. And feeling the cassete in my hand was more satisfying than holding the most expensive chocolate bar.
That day was a bit different. I wanted to have a bigger picture of the cassete shelf. Shelf M. M for The Moffatts, but my eyes were caught by a band named "Marilyn Manson". I was 10 years old, and this Marilyn Manson album cover was the scariest thing I have ever seen of a picture.
I knew metal bands, or any band beside either Spice Girls type or Nat King Cole type always show hyper-horror pictures for their album covers, but they did not scare me. They made a 10 year old girl giggle sarcastically at their effort to scare, but this Marilyn Manson things.. without much effort they touched my nerve that reacts to a nightmare. There were some albums of this band, in my opinion that time, it shows that not many people buy their shit. Grabbed The Moffatts and ran away! Of course I paid first...
For my like of music, while another 4th grader kids read Bobo Magazine,
I bought KaWanku or Hai! . It's ot that I wanted to grow up so fast! But there are lyrics of my favorite songs in KaWanku and Hai, and I was not touched by the internet yet, and sometimes album covers don't have the lyrics printed on it. And FYI, I bought cassettes and magazines with my own money. Parents would pay for me if I asked for Bobo magz or albums of Maisy, Chikita Meidy, etc
I still don't know why, but probably because KaWanku costs Bobo x 2 and The Moffatts also costs Bragi x 2. You know Bragi? Indonesian boyband in late 90s.
And in the teen-music magazines I read, I was horrified by short vague articles about Marilyn Manson and his behaviors.
Rumors had it that Marilyn Manson is an evil worshipper. Maybe I shouldn't care, I was just a 10 year old and already enjoying music of my favorite musicians.. but well, I guess I'm a curious girl. I listened to MM's "The Reflecting God" , the accoustic version, maybe. I didn't finish the song. I was scared, for my sake, there is none of underground, trash, anything you call it -- song ever scare me. They just hurt my ears. But that time I came to a conclusion that Marilyn Manson was not a human. Laugh at me, you can.

the journey continued...
I decided not to touch any Marilyn Manson cassetes anymore, and I continued my liking to The Moffatts and Backstreet Boys. For BSB, I had their albums from their first that only played 2 or 3 songs: I'll Never Break Your Heart and one song with more dancey mood. Then their album in 1996 , listen it free on youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdZZvvZ3NdY , Backstreet's Back (that famous "Evereybuddeah.."), their Millenium (in which they lost the "naughtiness" in their music) so I stopped buying their album. Black & Blue, their later album, was just a better crap than Never Gone, their 2004 album. My cousin kept buying their albums so I could listen and judge :D
junior high
It was the fever of Sheila On 7. Well, they are nice, but I think that my junior high fellows are late, I already rooted for Sheila in their first and second album when I was at the last year in my primary school. "Lihat, Dengar, Rasakan" was the song that drive my junior high fellows crazy. There was also "Song For Mama" which one of them asked me to translate. In the fever of Sheila On 7, I was high with Limp Bizkit. I had a blind date with a college student, and when we met up, I told him that I am 13 years old. He then said that we better cut anything in this relationship, if there was anything going on... hahaha! And he decided to buy me something as a good bye gift. He asked me what I want, and I said "Limp Bizkit cassete." I took "The Chocolate Starfish Flavored Water". Yeah!!! Free gift!! Thank you Ari, whose telephone number was 62-341-563556 !! Not long after the release of The Chocolate Starfish, The Moffatts announced they stop, no more The Moffatts, after their groundbreaking Submodalities. All teen magazines wrote about this but not mentioning any reason. I was asking why, is it because they changed how their music sounds like so fans wouldn't buy Submodalities and bankrupt? No way, they held a concert in Jakarta and it was successful. Seriously, The Moffatts are poetic, and they make music with their intelligence. None of their song bored me except "Miss You Like Crazy" and it wasn't their song.
It WAS sad but since I know I'm alone, I mean nobody cared as much as I did, so I tried to act like an adult "What the hell who cares? Sorry to hear about your band but I've got a lot of works in office so bye bye"
Actually I cried in bed about it, hahaha yes I did. But there was this girl, Hana Permatasari Tanjung, who sat next to me in class, I made her listen to The Moffatts, she called me crying and I was acting cool. Hahahaha great, so I was not alone doing that cry-over-the-bye-bye-of-the-moffats. I then avoid listening to their music and enjoyed Limp Bizkit.
After Limp Bizkit, came Eminem on my playlist. I did not like rap music, but Eminem is genius, that time. Sheila On 7 was still at the top chart, everyone I know listened to SO7 and M2M. I bought M2M's album just because I was curious of their music since it was only "Mirror Mirror" played on the radio. Not bad, but it was true pop. Pop at the poppest, :D Pop at its core. So, my favorite when I was in Junior High were Eminem, Limp Bizkit, The Cardigans, Natalie Imbruglia, Sarah McLachlan, and The Collective Soul. Beside M2M, I also bought S Club 7's album due to curiosity, and dissapointed. I just liked that "Never Had A Dream Come True" song. Oh, not to be forgotten: Lene Marlin with her "Unforgivable Sinner".
On my senior year, I bought randomly: No Doubt's Rock Steady and this album was great!
